Andre Norton

Andrew North nannte sich die junge Dame auf Anraten des Verlages, als sie in den 1930er Jahren ihre ersten Romane veröffentlichte, denn weibliche Autoren hatten zu dieser Zeit im Fantasy-Bereich noch keine Lobby. Als Alice Mary Norton wurde sie am 17. Februar 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio geboren. In der Schule schrieb sie für die Schülerzeitung und startete auch bereits mit ihrem Roman „Ralestone Luck“. Sie begann ein Studium in Geschichte, musste jedoch nach einem Jahr abbrechen, weil sie ihre Familie unterstützen musste. Tagsüber verdiente sie Geld mit verschiedenen Jobs, abends besuchte sie Kurse in Journalismus und Englisch. Sie arbeitete dann für die Library of Congress und bis 1950 für die Kinderabteilung der öffentlichen Bibliothek in Cleveland.

Nachdem sie mit ihren ersten Romanen Erfolg hatte, wurde sie 1958 freiberufliche Autorin und änderte ihr Pseudonym in Andre Norton. 1966 zog sie nach Florida, später nach Tennessee. 1999 eröffnete sie dort die High-Hallack Recherche-Bibliothek für Autoren. Ihre bekannteste Schöpfung ist der Hexenwelt-Zyklus, der insgesamt über 30 Bücher umfasst.

Andre Norton, die nie verheiratet war, starb nach langer Krankheit am 17. März 2005 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee an Herzversagen. Ihr Gesamtwerk umfasst etwa 130 Romane und über hundert Erzählungen in den Bereichen Fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery, Western, Krimis, Spionage- und Piratenabenteuer sowie historische Romane. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und wurde als erste Frau in die Science Fiction Hall of Fame aufgenommen.
