Der Schotte beriet als Mentor auch Lewis Carroll (Pseudonym von Charles Dodgson), und überzeugte diesen, seinen Roman "Alice im Wunderland" zu veröffentlichen. MacDonald bewegte sich zeit seines Lebens in Autorenkreisen und war unter anderem mit Alfred Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens Wilkie Collins, William Makepiece Thackery befreundet.
